Roque Hidalgo Álvarez

Roque Hidalgo Álvarez is a Full professor at the Department of Applied Physics in the University of Granada (UGR). He got his PhD in 1979 working on Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics of Electrokinetic processes and received the 1980 PhD Excellence award for his dissertation. From 1984-1985, he was a postdoctoral associate at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry & Colloid Science in the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands) working on electrokinetic properties of model polymer colloids. In 2015, he was nominated as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Roque has been working on different topics of Colloid and Interface Science such as: electrical surface charge and colloidal stability of polymer colloids in 2 and 3-D, ion size correlations and charge reversal in real colloids, physical adsorption and covalent binding of proteins to functionalized colloids, mechanisms of colloidal stability and interfacial properties, dynamic scaling concepts and the Smoluchowski kinetic equation. In addition, he has contributed in several experimental studies on the electrokinetic properties and stability mechanisms of model colloids: polymer colloids and liposomes. Currently, his research is focused on the experimental studies of interfacial activity of Janus particles at liquid interfaces. Also, he is co-operating with Professor Juan de Vicente in the study of magnetorheological fluids (MRF).

He has been involved in 44 National and International Research Projects. Among them, he has led a total of 12 research projects funded by EU-FP6, MICINN, MINECO and Junta de Andalucía (Spain) and 17 contracts with private companies as Repsol, Kolmer, Biokit and Operon.

He teaches Thermodynamics at the undergraduate level. His post-graduate teaching was Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics (Masters of Colloid and Interface Science at the University of Granada and Applied Chemistry at the University of Basque Country). He has supervised twenty-five PhD students and currently is supervising one more. In 1999 and 2010, Roque chaired the IV Liquid Matter Conference and the International Soft Matter Conference, respectively; both conferences were held in Granada. He serves as reviewer in top journal and research foundations and is member of the Advisory Board of Soft Matter (RSC). Also, Roque has been guest editors of four special issues published at Colloids & Surfaces 92 (1-2) 1994 and 267(1-2) 2005, Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 12(8) 2000 and Soft Matter 7(4) 2011.
